Frequently asked questions

The most common technical questions about ponds and koi.

Technical questions

What filter does my pond need?

There is no single filter for every pond. The choice depends on water volume, the number and size of fish, the pump, the installation and the maintenance required.

What is the difference between mechanical and biological filtration?

Mechanical filtration removes solid particles from the water, while biological filtration provides a home for the bacteria that convert harmful nitrogen compounds.

How do I choose the right pond pump?

Consider the required flow, head height, pipework, the filter and the whole hydraulic circuit. A pump's nominal flow is not always its real flow once installed.

Does a pond need aeration?

Yes. Adequate oxygen matters for the fish and for the biological filter. Demand rises with temperature, fish numbers and biological load.

How often should I test the water?

Test the main parameters regularly, and especially when the pond is new, the stock changes, fish behaviour changes or the system is altered.

What should I check before buying koi?

Know whether the pond has suitable volume, stable water conditions and enough filtration, and choose fish that suit what the system can support.
